Magic Realism-Art of the Weimar Republic

Born in the aftermath of bitter defeat for Germany in World War I, the Weimar Republic struggled to achieve a semblance of liberal thinking. Had this fledgling democracy overcome the resistance of reactionary forces from within, it might have averted World War II, acknowledged as one of the worst calamities in human history. In this context we hope to discover why it has been said that the Republic carried within it the seeds of its own destruction. "Magic Realism” is a phrase to describe the strange fusion of real & fantastic that dominated the art through styles such as Expressionism , Dada & Bauhaus.
